Time Wasters in Nursing Practice

I'm doing a research project regarding time wasters in nursing care. I need for as many nurses to respond as possible with their list of top 10 time wasters at work. Thanks so much for your help!!

    Dear APN,
I'm also working on this project (Time wasters for nurses) but in AUBMC in Lebanon. Is there any way to have access to the results that you got in your institution?
    Thank you!

I have been an RN for 30 years and increasingly I feel that I can no longer accomplish my job. This is a direc result of systems designed to "improve patient safety" foster involvement and contirbute to the data collection that is requested by the various state and federal agencies.
1.Medication Administration. There is from 8 to 10 steps invloved in giving 1 medication, providing it's available.
2.Too many screens that require navigating through for data collection. Anything involved requires you not leave the computer less you risk loosing data.
    3. Technology breakdowns Screens freeze/programs drop off (don't leave your screen for anything or you any reason or you may have to restart from the begining). If your computer freezes in the middle of a function you can not get back to that function on another machine because that function is already accessed.
    4. Interuptions that you may or may not be able to respond to.
5.The physical layouts and private rooms of modern units to not provide us with the ability to see and entire unit at one glance. This impedes the nurses ability to quickly asses a situation that may be developing ie patient falls.
    6. Too much Data collection required of staff nurses. There is not enough time to do this without diminishing the RN's primary role as a caretaker. It also leaves the data collected of questionable value.
7.Poor communication to RN's at ground level due to limited education budgets and the volume of material that needs to be educated on.
I'm sure given time I could come up with more. All I can say is I'm glad I got to see it when I could actually function.
